Abstract |
This study was conducted to investigate the challenges faced by schools in the Paddiruppu Education zone in implementing the School Based Development Plan to identify these challenges and propose strategies to overcome them in order to improve the teaching and learning process. The study was conducted as a descriptive study and a mixed research method. A total of 169 participants were involved in the study, including 50 school principals, 63 subject coordinators, 50 teachers from the School Management Committee, and 6 Sri Lankan Education Administrative Service officers including the Planning Deputy Director of Education. Questionnaires, interviews, observations, and document analysis were used to collect data for the study. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS Statistics Version 29.0.2.0(20) and Microsoft Excel. The current exist practices of the School Based Development Plan in relation to the teaching and learning process were first analyzed. Subsequently, six dependent variables were selected of the current practices of the teaching-learning process, and their mean and standard deviation were 72.00 and 17.20, respectively. Through the documentary analysis, collected data over a six years period on the GCE (O/L) examination results for 39 schools, the GCE (A/L) examination results for 21 secondary schools, and the Grade 5 Scholarship examination results for 64 schools. The correlation between each of these examination results and the six dependent variables representing the current practices of the teaching-learning process was analyzed separately. Based on this analysis, the Pearson correlation coefficients for the correlation between the GCE A/L examination results, GCE O/L examination results, and Grade 5 Scholarship examination results with the current practices of the teaching-learning process were found to be +0.597, +0.391, and +0.268, respectively. The study found a statistically significant correlation between the current practices of the teaching-learning process and student exam results at the 5% significance level. This suggests that there is a positive relationship between the implementation of the SBDP and student performance. The study also identified the challenges faced in implementing the teaching-learning process in the SBDP and recommended strategies that can be used to improve the teaching-learning process through the SBDP. The study concluded that it is essential to improve the teaching-learning process through the SBDP. |
